KAILUA-KONA — A U.S. Army logistics support vessel, or LSV, made a stop Wednesday in waters off Kailua-Kona.
The 272-foot U.S. Army Vessel General Brehon B. Somervell (LSV-3) arrived off the Kona Coast on Wednesday morning and anchored near Kahului Bay, south of Lunapule Road. It remained there until early Wednesday afternoon.
Mike Donnelly, public affairs officer for the U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii Pohakuloa Training Area, said the vessel coordinated with the port authority to make the stop before heading to Kawaihae Harbor. An LSV-3 transports equipment between Oahu and Kawaihae in support of training at PTA.
“Typically, the soldiers on board who are assigned to the 8th Theater Sustainment Command based at Fort Shafter on Oahu, conduct training while sailing to different ports across the state,” Donnelly said.
The Somervell, named for the general in charge of Army logistics during World War II, can carry 24 M1A2 tanks and up to 2,000 tons, according to military newspaper Stars and Stripes.
